Bike/Ped Coalition Speaker Helps Connect Transportation and Health

July 7 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

ESMMYC partner, the Bike/Ped Coalition (BPC) of York County, invites you to hear Steve Yaffe, of Yaffe Mobility Consulting, discuss “Connecting Transportation and Health: A Guide to Communication and Collaboration.” This BPC member is famous for his line, “you can’t float to a busstop.” Contact Liz Duda or Ben Ullman if you are not on the BPC distribution list and need the Zoom log-in info.

About the presentation: Too often, transportation projects are road-centric without reference to the health needs of people who need to walk or cycle more. Too often, healthcare and other community resources are located on cheap land without transit service or even pathways. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Committee for Environment and Sustainability approved a new guidebook to support collaboration among transportation and health professionals. Advocates and professionals focused on transportation & public health will gain access to a user-friendly guidebook that identifies the challenges and best practices for successful communication and collaboration including successful practices for establishing and fostering partnerships between transportation agencies and public health organizations as projects are planned and reviewed. After attending this session, participants will be able to better advocate for transportation/health collaborations, pursue successful collaboration platforms, and understand several aspects of the Social Determinants of Health.

About the speaker: Steve Yaffe (Yaffe Mobility Consulting, yaffe@ymobility.info ) oversaw planning and operations for Arlington County Virginia’s local fixed-route and demand response transit until retiring in 2018.
