Pennies for Progress Aims to Keep York County Moving

Nov. 11, 2020 (York County, SC) York County Pennies for Progress ensures ongoing road improvements. The Bike/Ped Coalition of York County welcomed Patrick Hamilton, Pennies for Projects Program Manager, to our November meeting. He described the program and its history, shared a map of Pennies projects and photos of project improvements, and responded to questions. Here is what we learned.

Catawba Riversweep 2020

Oct. 4, 2020 (Tega Cay, SC) The Catawba River flows a little cleaner today thanks to the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation’s 1,300+ volunteers who headed outside to collect trash – by land and by river – for yesterday’s Catawba Riversweep! For 17 years, in partnership with the Lake Wylie Marine Commission, the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation has held the annual Lake Wylie Riversweep. ESMMYC chair has been site captain at the Tega Cay Marina, championing Tega Cay Healthy Kids, since 2010.

ESMMYC Shared Mindfulness & Meditation at April General Membership Meeting

Apr. 19, 2020 (York County, SC) ESMMYC leadership team members, Sara Cain-da Costa of Synergy Yoga Wellness and Janet Wojcik of Winthrop University, shared mindfulness and meditation techniques for stress reduction, concentration and focus. Critically important in this challenging time, these approaches can also be used for management of pain, chronic illness, and weight.

ESMMYC Feb. 2020 Meeting Summary – Healthy Bucks

Mar. 24, 2020 (York County, SC) ESMMYC welcomed Kelsey Allen to our February 11, 2020, general membership meeting. She spoke about Eat Smart Move More South Carolina (ESMMSC) work on House Bill H-32-50 on Healthy Bucks. Lynn Caldwell discussed ESMMYC Access to Healthy Foods work. The meeting concluded with a roundtable discussion.

SNAP-Education at the October ESMMYC Meeting

York County, SC (Oct. 13, 2019) The October ESMMYC meeting included SNAP-Education program information, a lesson in healthy eating, and a live demo of healthy spinach chicken quesadillas, with substantial samples! SNAP-Ed promotes healthy lifestyles, especially for at-risk population groups experiencing the greatest burden of chronic disease.

Bike Rodeo and All Inclusive Playground Benefit from 6th Grade Project

Tega Cay, SC (Mar. 31,  2019) Local 6th graders assigned the Pay it Forward project, “to think of an idea for change that helps our community and put it into action,” made an impact. One team hosted a “Bike Rodeo” in which they taught bike safety and promoted a love of bicycling to about 40 preschool and elementary school-aged kids. They also raised funds and awareness for All Play Together all-inclusive playground.

“Healthy Weight & Your Child” at the Upper Palmetto YMCA

York County, SC (Oct. 8, 2018) The Healthy Weight and Your Child evidence-based program is coming to town! Special guest speaker, Halie Patterson, Community Health Coordinator at the Upper Palmetto YMCA, described the program in our October membership meeting. 3rd SC Annual Population Health Summit Focuses on Health Equity

Rock Hill, SC (June 8, 2018) – The 3rd Annual SC Population Health Summit was a success. ESMMYC joined community-based leaders, including healthcare professionals, social workers, non-profit stakeholders and business leaders at the York County location of the 11 venues where the event was held throughout SC. The goal was to foster community health improvement efforts through collaborative learning. How can we create a “culture of equity,” ensuring “health equity” in policies and working together to reach goals?
