What do you get when you bring together hundreds of teens from across South Carolina, a celebrity speaker, and lots of activities? If you guessed a roomful of energy, you’re right. These teens are youth leaders, and every year they gather in Columbia for Eat Smart Move More South Carolina’s annual Youth Summit. They’re part of the Healthy Young People Empowerment (HYPE) Project teams and gather for an exciting day to celebrate their successes, meet other youth leaders, and share stories of how they were able to effectively advocate for change in their communities.
This year, we’re branching out to include teens from other youth-serving organizations to make our Summit more inclusive and to help youth leaders network and learn about advocating #beyondthehashtag. We’ll have breakout sessions focused on organizing, how government works, social media, and other topics to help teens strengthen their voice. There will be fun activities and, perhaps a walking tour of SC State University — all on July 15 in Orangeburg.
Who should attend the Youth Summit?
The Youth Summit is open to all HYPE teams, including their adult advisors and parents, as well as youth-serving organizations working with youth ages 12-17, key community partners, such as
elected officials, school staff and administrators, community leaders, and coalition members.
