Many people are unfamiliar with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) incentives, but these financial incentives can help farmers, business owners and families across the nation. SNAP incentive programs encourage participants to purchase more fruits and vegetables, which in turn benefits local businesses and reduces food insecurity by providing a safety net for low-income families and individuals. Nearly two-thirds of all SNAP participants are children, elderly and people with disabilities.
The State of South Carolina currently has funding for SNAP incentives; however, those funds aren’t a permanent structure of the SNAP system. This could become a big issue, as there are many families in our communities who are struggling to feed children the proper nutrition. Not to mention the elderly and those with disabilities who currently have difficulty accessing and affording healthy food.
But we have the power to make a change. By working together to draw attention to House Bill H.3250, we can boost local economies and ensure that those in South Carolina who are most in need obtain access to healthier foods. H.3250 establishes a permanent fruit and vegetable grant program to incentivize produce purchases for SNAP participants at farmers markets and food co-ops.

Encouraging SNAP participants with incentives to buy local, fresh produce from local farmers markets will help improve local economies and support local farmers. It will also continue the decline in obesity rates for South Carolina’s children in the SNAP program. It is for all these reasons that we urge your support of this important measure.
