The SilverSneakers Fitness Program is a comprehensive older adult fitness program that addresses the needs of the Medicare (65+) population. SilverSneakers members receive a free basic membership to participating fitness centers and YMCA’s along with the opportunity to participate in SilverSneakers group exercise classes.

 

SilverSneakers offers an innovative blend of physical activity, healthy lifestyle and socially oriented programming that allows older adults to take greater control of their health. SilverSneakers members receive:

  • A free fitness center membership at a nearby participating location with access to conditioning classes, exercise equipment, pool, sauna and other available amenities
  • Access to any participating fitness center throughout the U.S. while traveling
  • Customized SilverSneakers classes designed exclusively for older adults who want to improve their strength, flexibility, balance and endurance
  • Health education seminars and other events that promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle
  • A specially trained Senior Advisorat the fitness center to introduce you to SilverSneakers and acquaint you with their site

The organization has worked extensively to encourage a more active, healthy community with particular focus on children and families. This has been achieved through systems like Safe Routes to School and the first successful Bicycle-Friendly Community initiative in South Carolina.

Diabetes 101

The SC DHEC Diabetes 101 presentation as designed to create a uniformed diabetes awareness education tool to be used in the community. It is a 1.5 to 2 hour community presentation, designed to target the general adult population, which includes:

  • People with Type 2 diabetes
  • People at risk for diabetes
  • Caretakers of people with diabetes
  • People who want to gain information on diabetes

Information included in the presentation is based on the American Diabetes Association (ADA) clinical recommendations and the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) 7 Self- Care Professional Resource. Participants with Type 2 diabetes are encouraged to attend Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) programs for information and assistance with self-management skills.

The Hub City Farmers’ Market(formerly Spartanburg Nutrition Council) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works to increase the demand and availability of healthy foods in Spartanburg County South Carolina. The organization serves as a resource for all thing related to fresh produce: buying, selling, growing, preparing, ect. The HCFM’s program of work consists of operating multiple weekly open air farmers’ markets, vegetable gardening, assisting small and medium farms, promoting/enabling food assistance programs and more.
