The SilverSneakers Fitness Program is a comprehensive older adult fitness program that addresses the needs of the Medicare (65+) population. SilverSneakers members receive a free basic membership to participating fitness centers andYMCA’s along with the opportunity to participate in SilverSneakers group exercise classes.

SilverSneakersoffers an innovative blend of physical activity, healthy lifestyle and socially oriented programming that allows older adults to take greater control of their health. SilverSneakers members receive:

  • A free fitness center membership at a nearby participating location with access to conditioning classes, exercise equipment, pool, sauna and other available amenities

Healthy Palmetto is a collaboration among Palmetto Health and community partners to encourage healthy weight, good nutrition, and physical activity.  Healthy Palmetto provides several programs to Richland, Lexington, Fairfield, Pickens  counties, and surrounding areas residents.

  • The Healthy Palmetto Walking Club is a free incentive-based walking program that provides pedometer and incentives for reaching goals.
  • The “Fit.Together” is a program that offers health education classes focusing on diabetes, good nutrition and physical activity for fifth-grade students.
  • Healthy Palmetto is  WE CAN! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activities & Nutrition) site that teaches parents how to help their families live a healthier lifestyle through better nutrition and physical activity.
  • Healthy Campus is a program that offers health education classes focusing on diabetes, nutrition, high blood pressure, and physical activity for college freshmen at participating schools

Diabetes 101

The SC DHEC Diabetes 101 presentation as designed to create a uniformed diabetes awareness education tool to be used in the community. It is a 1.5 to 2 hour community presentation, designed to target the general adult population, which includes:

  • People with Type 2 diabetes
  • People at risk for diabetes
  • Caretakers of people with diabetes
  • People who want to gain information on diabetes

Information included in the presentation is based on the American Diabetes Association (ADA) clinical recommendations and the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) 7 Self- Care Professional Resource. Participants with Type 2 diabetes are encouraged to attend Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) programs for information and assistance with self-management skills.

Healthy Carolina is a campus-wide health initiative at the University of South Carolina that guides the planning and implementation of programs, interventions and policies that support a healthy campus environment to live, learn, work, and play. Healthy Carolina’s mission is to create a campus environment that encourages and promotes the development and maintenance of a healthy body, mind, and spirit through the collaborative development, promotion and assessment of a wide-ranging array of wellness programs and services for all students, faculty and staff at the University.

The following Healthy Carolina initiatives are only open to University faculty, staff, and students:

  • Fitness Buddies is an online networking tool designed to put University students, faculty and staff in touch with others sharing similar fitness goals and athletic interests for encouragement and companionship when engaging in physical activity. Fitness Buddies is designed to make it easier for students, faculty and staff to find workout partners and get involved in physical activity offerings on campus and in the larger Columbia community.
  • The Lactation Support Program is funded by Eat Smart Move More South Carolina to establish lactation support and management services at the university. The program includes: Breastfeeding classes with a certified Lactation Consultant, Lunch N’ Learns regarding pumping and proper nutrition, resources to facilitate pumping after returning to work, a peer mentoring program, and lactation policy development
  • The Healthy Carolina Wellness Community is a residential housing community designed to promote the academic success and personal development of students, by: providing motivated, health-conscious students the opportunity to live in a community designed to enhance personal and collective wellness, fostering the concepts of wellness and facilitating wellness being made a priority in the lives of the students residing within, increasing faculty-student interaction, and providing active learning experiences.
  • Campus Wellness includes two offices; one specifically serving students and the other serving faculty and staff. Campus Wellness offers a wide range of programs and services to assist members of our community with making healthy choices and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The following Healthy Carolina initiatives are open to the entire Columbia community:

  • The Healthy Campus Clearinghouses are devoted to the collection and dissemination of information relevant to healthy campus initiatives, health promotion activities, tobacco policies and smoking cessation programmatic initiatives on college campuses, lactation support programs, and health center administration. These clearinghouses were established to provide institutions of higher education with resources and networking opportunities to aid in the development successful programs and policies for the benefit of their students, faculty, and staff.
  • The Farmers Market is located on campus and is great place to find produce, meats, cheeses, and novelties from local vendors.
  • The Healthy Carolina Task Force provides campus leadership in the study and promotion of Healthy Carolina 2010 goals and objectives at the University of South Carolina Columbia campus. The Healthy Carolina Task Force consists of faculty, staff and student representatives from across campus, as well as members of the community with an interest in collaborating to improve health on and off campus.

Healthy Carolina Farmers Market

The Healthy Carolina Farmers Market is open to the entire Columbia Community. It is a convenient way for USC students, faculty and staff to shop for fresh, healthy, locally grown products. Members of the community, especially those working downtown are encouraged to stop by and do their shopping for produce, meats, cheeses, and novelties from local vendors. The Healthy Carolina Farmers Market is co-sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and University of South Carolina Student Government.

The Market is held bimonthly and the 2nd and 4thTuesdays of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the Russell House between the gates of Green  Steet on the University of South Carolina Campus.

    Good nutrition, exercise and oral health care are all important in raising a healthy child. The month of February is “Take Heart and Smile” month at EdVenture Children’s Museum. Throughout the month, enjoy special programs that teach kids the importance of having a healthy mouth and a healthy body. Special events include:
    • Meet Flo and Mo (EdVenture’s automated health educators) and learn about taking care of your teeth (every Saturday in February)
    • Dental Health Fair featuring games, using math, art, reading and science to learn more about keeping your mouth healthy, including a visit from the “Smiles for a Lifetime” puppets and “The Tooth Fairy”
