Inspiring Wellness

A Low Country Community Health Initiative

Inspiring Wellness is a low country community health initiative that consists of 8 seminars on the psychology of wellness and healthy lifestyle change, nutrition and exercise. The program is designed by lifestyle expert psychologist Dr. Howard Rankin and organized by the health ministry of the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head. It is supported by the wellness team from Hilton Head Regional healthcare who will run a concurrent youth program. Program runs from January 1420- March 17 and kicks off with a showing of the award winning Million Calorie March movie featuring fat-fighting crusader Gary Marino who is also a program presenter.

The SilverSneakers Fitness Program is a comprehensive older adult fitness program that addresses the needs of the Medicare (65+) population. SilverSneakers members receive a free basic membership to participating fitness centers and YMCA’s along with the opportunity to participate in SilverSneakers group exercise classes.

SilverSneakers offers an innovative blend of physical activity, healthy lifestyle and socially oriented programming that allows older adults to take greater control of their health. SilverSneakers members receive:

  • A free fitness center membership at a nearby participating location with access to conditioning classes, exercise equipment, pool, sauna and other available amenities
  • Access to any participating fitness center throughout the U.S. while traveling
  • Customized SilverSneakers classes designed exclusively for older adults who want to improve their strength, flexibility, balance and endurance
  • Health education seminars and other events that promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle
  • A specially trained Senior Advisor at the fitness center to introduce you to SilverSneakers and acquaint you with their site

The award-winning* SilverSneakers Fitness Program is a proven, results-oriented program that enables older adults, often burdened with chronic conditions, to take charge of their health and maintain an active, independent lifestyle.

Diabetes 101

The SC DHEC Diabetes 101 presentation as designed to create a uniformed diabetes awareness education tool to be used in the community. It is a 1.5 to 2 hour community presentation, designed to target the general adult population, which includes:

  • People with Type 2 diabetes
  • People at risk for diabetes
  • Caretakers of people with diabetes
  • People who want to gain information on diabetes

Information included in the presentation is based on the American Diabetes Association (ADA) clinical recommendations and the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) 7 Self- Care Professional Resource. Participants with Type 2 diabetes are encouraged to attend Diabetes Self Management Education (DSME) programs for information and assistance with self-management skills.

The LifeFit Wellness Services (LWS) are a part of Beaufort Memorial Hospital, the largest not-for-profit hospital between Charleston and Savannah. Our LWS offers:

  • Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • Dietary Consultation
  • A Diabetes Education Program
  • Community Education with a Mobile Wellness Unit
  • A LifeFit Wellness Center, a fitness facility which offers Wellness specialists who supervise each member to optimize their health and reduce the further risk of disease.

Staff include: Health Educators, Nurses, Physicians, Exercise Physiologists, Dietitians, Respiratory Therapists, and other consulting staff.

LifeFit Community Health provides outreach services to the community though the following programs:

  • Prenatal Education Classes through Baby University
  • Chronic Disease Prevention and Education
  • Support Groups
  • Health Fairs
  • The Speakers Bureau
  • Hospital Tours
  • Screening Programs
  • Specialized Asthma Services (Including a summertime Camp Sea Breeze for children with asthma)
  • Health Care Programs for Youth (a monthly evening Medical Careers Group and a one semester Cooperative Program for high school seniors interested in health care careers)
  • A 40 Foot Mobile Wellness Unit which provides free and low cost screening and health education to residents of Beaufort and Jasper Counties

LifeFit Community Health also participates in many countywide human service campaigns to address issues such as prenatal care, cessation of tobacco use, adolescent health issues, obesity, and chronic disease.

We are also involved in annual community events such as the American Heart Association Low Country Heart Walk, The March of Dimes Walk for Babies and the ACS Relay for Life.

LifeFit normally served about 20,000 residents each year through their programs and services.
