Community Gardens and Farmers Markets

Municipalities throughout Lexington County are embracing healthy eating. The City of West Columbia now has a community garden located on the grounds of City Hall (200 N. 12th Street). The garden is free and open to the public to plant, tend, and harvest. Director of Grants and Special Projects Tara Greenwood said, “The Community Garden Project is a new project being undertaken by the City of West Columbia. We have enjoyed starting this worthwhile project with the assistance of the Palmetto Pride – Community Pride Grant”.
The Town of Chapin has a Farmers Market that is open on Saturday’s. The Market (100 block of Clark St.) kicked off in May and will run through October. This new community offering provides residents and visitors with a healthy and fun shopping alternative with local growers and artisans selling fresh produce, dairy products and meats as well as handmade items like candles, jewelry, soaps and woodcrafts. Sponsored by the Town of Chapin and in cooperation with a grant from Eat Smart, Move More Lexington County, another unique feature of the market is interactive demonstrations that promote healthy eating and active lifestyles.
Come on out to Lexington County and see what we are all doing to eat smart and move more!
