Making the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice

Public Meeting on Bicycle, Pedestrian & Greenways Plan

The results of a planning process that began eight months ago will be unveiled at a public meeting on Thursday, May 9th in downtown Camden. With support from the Healthy South Carolina Initiative, Eat Smart Move More Kershaw County commissioned a Kershaw County Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Greenways Plan that is nearly complete.

Whether it is for transportation, exercise, or relaxing with the family, more and more people are seeing bicycling and walking as an important part of the community’s quality of life and health. The Bicycle, Pedestrian, Greenways Plan is one citizen-led response to this. The Plan outlines new policies and programs, along with a blueprint for expanding a safe and inviting network of bicycle, pedestrian, and trail facilities.

The planning team, which includes consultants Alta Planning + Design, Alliance Consulting Engineers, and the nonprofit Palmetto Conservation Foundation, has engaged the community during the Plan development process through the use of surveys, a public workshop, stakeholder interviews, and active involvement from the Eat Smart Move More Kershaw County citizen committee. The team has relied on both technical data and community opinion to develop a plan that is feasible and appropriate for the Kershaw County community. The results of the planning process and specific recommendations for policies, programs, and facilities will be unveiled at a public workshop at the Robert Mills Courthouse at 607 Broad Street in Camden. A short presentation will begin at 5:30pm. The community is urged to attend to learn about the recommendations, provide feedback, and meet with fellow citizens interested in taking an active role in supporting implementation of the community’s vision for becoming more bike-, walk- and trail-friendly!
