Public Health Advocates Release Model Beverage and Food Vending Machine Standards

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA)—a coalition of public health organizations and experts—released model standards for food and beverages sold in vending machines. The standards, which advocates stressed can be applied to machines on both public property and private workplaces and which should also be accompanied by point of purchase calorie labeling, contain recommended limits on calories, saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugar. NANA also released model legislation that can be used by state and local policymakers to codify the model standards.
