Community Leaders

Drew Griffin

Through the years, we’ve worked with exceptional individuals who understand local challenges facing their communities, and have the passion and the vision to create opportunities where people can make healthy choices where they live, work, learn, play and pray. We’re recognizing these individuals, who have been nominated by their peers and colleagues, to showcase their commitment to making the healthy choice, the easy choice.

Drew Griffin knows that a healthier community is a more livable one, and as City Manager he is doing just that for the City of Florence. Having studied Community and Role Development as well as Resource Economics, Drew realizes the importance of connections of community to the natural world and the benefits it has for citizens, as well as the city itself.

“Drew leads by personal example and by professional decision-making,” says Jennie Peze of City Center Farmer’s Market in Florence. “He has a demonstrated history of action on healthy communities and is well-liked, thus a credible opinion leader.”

He has worked to create more than 40 miles of trails and boardwalks for community members to enjoy and has learned the power of teaching youth the importance of natural food. He wants to educate citizens on how healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive and give them the experience to begin their own lifestyle change. By doing so, he hopes to reduce the number of lifestyle diseases, such as Type 2 diabetes and heart problems, when they become older.

“I want employees to be able to retire, and for them to enjoy the fruits of a healthy lifestyle,” says Griffin. “I want them to be able to play with their grandchildren – to hike, walk, and feel healthy.”

Growing up with access to parks and outdoor spaces, he knows the importance and impact they have on one’s personal life and how they can help bring people together. He aims to make Florence a more desirable city to bring new citizens into and is helping to create more spaces to allow people to have an active lifestyle.
