Changes coming to SC Obesity Summit

2016_summitThanks to all of our attendees, sponsors, and exhibitors, the 13th Annual SC Obesity Summit experienced a record attendance of 325 healthy eating, active living professionals. As interest in the healthy eating, active living sector spreads into other professional work, Eat Smart, Move More SC (ESMMSC) is planning to expand the SC Obesity Summit to help fuel community-level work in making the healthy choice, the easy choice.

“We know professionals outside of public health are committed to creating healthier communities, and that’s why we believe it is important for us to find the mutually reinforcing activities and to further strategic discussions about how to amplify implementation activities through sharing of information and technical assistance” said Erika Kirby, chairman, ESMMSC board of directors. “Part of that technical assistance is providing them an opportunity to attend the SC Obesity Summit and gain the knowledge, tools, and contacts needed advance the community-centric work into a more impactful direction.”

The SC Obesity Summit is the only statewide conference that focuses on healthy eating and active living. Over the past 13 years, the Summit has grown in attendance as obesity prevention, healthy eating, and active living has grown in importance to community health across many sectors, such as employers, county and local government, education and others.

“We will all benefit from sharing the work being done throughout the state, and ignite interest to work across professions and to create a multi-field change strategy,” said Kirby. “We do this by exploring our shared goals and visions of what a healthy community looks like, and by providing a platform, such as the Summit, for all of these partners to convene.”
