A vibrant movement is afoot in cities across the country − farmers, activists, and community organizations are improving the health, economic outlook, and vitality of their communities through urban farming. Advocates are illustrating that urban agriculture is a pathway to making healthy food more available for low-income communities, a key to shifting economic revitalization efforts, and catalytic for battling the challenges of blight and abandonment.
This online course is an introduction to the many social media tools that are being used by public health organizations to connect in new, different, and interactive ways with the communities they serve. Through tutorials, videos, and activities, you will strengthen your knowledge and skills in using social media. This is the first in a three-part series designed to provide an overview of how social media can be used effectively in public health practice. Parts 2 and 3 (ready later in 2011) examine how social media can be used to address a public health intervention and gather information about the community.
