Kaplan, Allen Join ESMMSC Staff
Eat Smart Move More South Carolina is pleased to announce the addition of Rachel Kaplan, MPH, and Kelsey Allen, MPH, CHES to its staff. Kaplan joined in December as the new Diabetes Prevention Coordinator for the Diabetes Advisory Council of South Carolina, and Kelsey joined in January as the new Community Coordinator.
As the Diabetes Prevention Coordinator, Kaplan works with the Diabetes Advisory Council of South Carolina on statewide diabetes prevention efforts, primarily focusing on oversight, coordination, and implementation of the 2016-2021 Statewide Diabetes Prevention Plan for South Carolina. Before this position, she was the Youth Transitions Coordinator at Able South Carolina. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Services from Elon University in North Carolina, and received her Master’s in Public Health and a Certificate in Drug and Addiction Studies at the University of South Carolina. Rachel is very active with the North Carolina chapter of the American Diabetes Association and has been a Program Coordinator for the chapter’s summer camp over the past seven years.
Allen serves as the Community Coordinator and works with local coalitions throughout the state providing technical assistance and supporting community change toward improving access to healthy eating and active living. Before working with ESMMSC, she was a health educator for SCDHEC, as well as a WIC nutritionist where she counseled mothers of young children on healthy eating and active living. She received her Master’s in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor’s of Science in Nutritional Sciences from Michigan State University. Kelsey is passionate about seeing communities create sustainable changes and working with diverse groups of local coalition members.
