The Healthy Carolina Lactation Support Program is highlighted by CDC’s newly released “Stories from the Field”, a compilation of successes and lessons learned from states creating policy and environmental changes to address obesity. Funding from Eat Smart, Move More South Carolina developed the Healthy Carolina Lactation Support Program transforming the breastfeeding environment at the University of South Carolina (USC).
Prior to the program faculty, staff, and student mothers who wanted to breastfeed their babies had a difficult time expressing milk on campus, often pumping in closets or restrooms. This program created changes to accommodate the needs of breastfeeding mothers on campus. These accommodations include free breastfeeding classes, seminars, library resources, an email listserve, four comfortable lacation rooms, and a university policy that reinforces a woman’s right to have appropriate time and space to breastfeed in her workplace. This program has created greater workplace acceptance and support for breastfeeding.
