Eat Smart, Move More South Carolina is proud to announce the recipients
of the 2008 Community Seed Grants!

The vision of ESMMSC is to have a South Carolina in which healthy eating and active living are the pillars of healthy lifestyles in healthy communities. This opportunity was to help us achieve our mission of supporting healthy eating and active living by identifying and collaborating with partners that want to address physical activity and nutrition within the state. This one-year “seed” funding program is designed and developed to support ESMMSC members in community level
physical activity and nutrition related activities.

Following are the organizations selected for this opportunity!

Corporation for Economic Development
– to support development of
community and church outreach partnerships to support nutrition and
obesity reduction efforts in West Columbia, SC

Greenville School District – to implement two school garden projects

Zest Quest – conduct the four week “Families Eating Smart Moving More”
curriculum in all 13 school communities currently receiving the Zest
Quest program.

Medical College of South Carolina – Implement a StairWELL project for
the North Tower

University of South Carolina – Healthy Carolina – conduct a Lactation
Support Program throughout the University of South Carolina.

Trident United Way – improving healthy eating by youth advocating for
healthier environments and policy changes within their communities.

Women Infants and Children (Region 6) – to implement the Families Eating
Smart and Moving More curriculum in the three largest health departments
as part of the WIC educations programming.

SC Department of Disabilities and Special Needs – Implementing Steps to
Your Health, a health education program that focuses on promoting
healthy eating and increasing physical activity in adults with cognitive
disabilities.

Kershaw County Medical Center – Developing a health coalition in Kershaw
County focusing on healthy eating and active living.

Sumter County Active Lifestyles – to implement a Heritage Health Walk: a
pilot project of a lay led walking group and community health advocacy
initiative.
